Look at ESPN’s college football coaching carousel

It’s a sad reality in today’s college football landscape, but coaches are on a shorter than ever before and deep pockets make it possible to pay large buyouts to dismiss a head coach which has overstayed his welcome. Which coaches heading into 2022 are in the most trouble and which schools may surprise media and fans alike with a sudden opening? Pete Thamel of ESPN tackles this issue with his article “College football coaching carousel: Hot seats and breakdowns*.”

There are 12 Power Five coaches that are listed as either on the hot seat or on a seat that could get hot depending on the results of the 2022 season. There’s only one Big Ten coach on this edition of the list and I think we all know who that is.

ACC: Syracuse – Dino Babers (Hot)

ESPN says, 

Dino Babers is amid three consecutive losing seasons and five losing seasons in six years. The massive contract extension athletic director John Wildhack gave Babers in December 2018 still looms large here, as Babers would be owed more than $10 million if fired after this year. 

Louisville – Scott Satterfield (Worth Monitoring)

ESPN says, 

With back-to-back losing seasons and just two years remaining on his contract after this year, there’s likely going to be some action on Satterfield – an extension or departure. 

Florida State – Mike Norvell (Worth Monitoring)
