Carlos Locklyn discusses running back’s progression

Ducks drops in ESPN’s spring Top-25 while Utah, USC skyrocket up polls

The Oregon Ducks have a history of putting forth a strong and extremely respectable group of running backs. From LaMichael James to Royce Freeman, from Jonathan Stewart to DeAnthony Thomas, the Ducks are known for having a stout stable of RBs.

That doesn’t look to be changing under the new coaching staff, with RB coach Carlos Locklyn at the helm.

We talked a lot to Locklyn over the spring months as he worked to build the RB room back up following a number of transfers and moving pieces. Through the transfer portal and an impressive stretch of recruiting, the Ducks are once again looking strong in the backfield.

For the first time this fall, media members got a chance to talk to Locklyn following the 6th practice of the season. Here are some of the most notable quotes from that talk:

A Stacked Backfield

Question: What’s it like having 5 scholarship backs in the backfield after having just one scholarship player earlier before the spring?

Locklyn: “When I came, I never worried about it. I knew Coach Lanning was gonna put me in the right situation for the team, the right situation to find the right backs, and he knew I was going to work. Him and Coach Dillingham. We started off with two, and now we have five really good backs.”

Q: What does Mar’Keise Irving bring to the team?

Locklyn: “Toughness. I’m telling you, that kid is tough. Toughness, he’s just a natural-born leader bringing everybody together. Like I said, he did it in the Big Ten. It’s a joy to have him, coming to work every day, smile on his face, but he is tough.”
