Alex Padilla enjoying revamped Hawkeyes offense

Alex Padilla is hoping that perfect 3-0 record as a starting quarterback gets put to the test again in 2022. That might just mean he’s won this ongoing quarterback competition against Spencer Petras.

However it shakes out, the narrative around Iowa is that the Hawkeyes feel good that they have a pair of quarterbacks they are comfortable they can win football games with. Still, it’s the nature of a competitor to want to win any position battle.

With Padilla in the midst of an ongoing camp battle with Petras, he caught up with Hawk Central to discuss changes to Iowa’s offense, how it suits him and how the Hawkeyes’ quarterback competition is shaking out so far.

Where he’s made the biggest leaps in the offseason

“Obviously, with some different changes to our coaching staff and things like that, we’ve made a lot of changes to the offense conceptually and otherwise fundamentally, so I think kind of getting a grasp of all those new things and then applying it to the field has been kind of the biggest step for me as well as the other quarterbacks. I feel like we’ve been gaining a lot of strides these past couple days since the start of camp. We’re really kind of understanding the system that we have now and all the footwork, all the timing, all the nuances of the position that we’ve been focusing on this offseason and I feel like it’s been paying dividends these past couple days,” Padilla said.
