TE Charlie Woerner returns from PUP list

The 49ers on Sunday announced tight end Charlier Woerner was activated off the Physically Unable to Perform list. Woerner began camp on the PUP list after undergoing core muscle surgery, but he was on the field in team drills during Sunday’s session.

This is an important addition for the 49ers’ offense. The 2020 sixth-round pick climbed his way into the TE2 role last season behind George Kittle. He surpassed fellow backup TE Ross Dwelley by playing nearly 23 percent of the snaps. Dwelley played just under 18 percent.

San Francisco could rely more heavily on two-tight end sets this year if they wind up leaning more on the run game with quarterback Trey Lance under center. Whether the 49ers keep three or four tight ends won’t be decided until later in the preseason, but Woerner is almost certain to be one of them.
