5 Hawkeyes with the most to prove in 2022

Iowa seems to be a team that most are split on this year. Some see the Hawkeyes once again as contenders for the Big Ten and as a team that can finish the regular season possibly as high as 10-2. Others project the squad taking a bit of a step back, finishing between seven and eight wins.

Looking at the team now, though, there are a solid amount of question marks. It possibly can come down to the performances of a few. Football is a team game, but there definitely is a separate set of expectations for some on the field. With that in mind, here are the five Iowa Hawkeyes with the most to prove in 2022.

The 2023 NFL draft prospects

Let’s get this one out of the way early. Iowa has a couple of big time 2023 NFL draft prospects on this team, and I wanted to lump them together. Jack Campbell, Riley Moss, Sam LaPorta, and Tory Taylor are four of the best in the country at their respective positions. There is a lot of pressure on them with the NFL right on the doorstep to deliver a high level yet again.

Spencer Petras

It’s a drawn out talking point now heading midway into August with Spencer Petras. In all honesty, it’s the same conversation that started last offseason. We’ve seen some flashes of good play by Petras, but just not enough for the level everyone knows Iowa can be at. Likely heading into his third season as the starter with some offseason hype, there’s a lot riding on his shoulders.

Offensive coordinator Brian Ferentz is pretty much linked with Petras. While Petras has certainly not been at his best for the Hawkeyes, neither has Ferentz’s play-calling. It can get one-dimensional at times, and that was on display last season as Iowa’s offense put up some really disappointing…
