5 position battles to watch in preseason Week 2

The Buffalo Bills continue their 2022 season of play on Saturday against the Denver Broncos.

Unfortunately that schedule does still start in the preseason. Buffalo’s next exhibition game of the summer will feature an Orchard Park visit by the Broncos.

Still, there will be plenty to pay attention to at this time of the year.

With that, here are five Bills position battles to monitor during Week 2 of the preseason:

Punter

Rookie Matt Araiza got the job done against the Indianapolis Colts in Week 1 of the preseason. Not only did he have an 82-yard punt, Araiza did just fine holding the ball–even on the game-winning kick.

Truthfully, Matt Haack did nothing wrong. He had one punt with a shorter field that went well. But if Araiza has another solid effort, he might lock things up. Just the nature of the beast when a team uses a draft pick on a punter.

Both first-round rookie Kaiir Elam and sixth-rounder Christian Benford had splash plays in their first exhibition game in the NFL.

Just looking at the Bills roster, it’s clear that Elam and Benford are locked into the top-five cornerbacks. But if they both have another strong contest against the Broncos, the idea of Buffalo signing a veteran corner in free agency will quickly die.

Line depth

The Bills’ defensive front looked good against the Colts and Von Miller wasn’t even out there. Boogie Basham looked like a brand new player when he forced a fumble on a strip sack and AJ Epenesa didn’t look bad against the run, either.

Under those two on the depth chart, the D-line got sacks from Mike Love and Daniel Joseph as well.

On the offensive line, the entire starting unit did not play. Rookie sixth-round pick Luke Tenuta notably struggled but could be back out there getting another shot. Along with Tenuta, who played every snap against Indy, fellow rookie Alec Anderson saw 76 percent of snaps.

The two standouts from the Colts contest were rookie fifth-round pick Khalil Shakir and Isaiah Hodgins.
