Predicting the Jaguars 53-man roster after loss to Pittsburgh

Though they weren’t able to sneak out a win on a last-second field goal, the Jacksonville Jaguars punched above their weight against a rock-solid Pittsburgh Steelers squad in exhibition play on Saturday. They got some much-needed time to acclimate to full-paced football and got valuable repetitions in against a team that many prognosticators think will be a contender this season.

Unfortunately, of the multitude of players who saw action this weekend, only 53 will make it to the team’s final roster in September. Here are our predictions for every position following the loss against Pittsburgh:

Quarterback (2):

Trevor Lawrence
C.J. Beathard

These two quarterbacks should be enough to tide the Jaguars over this season, though if injuries were to become a factor they will need to find additional help on short notice. Rookie E.J. Perry may find himself stashed on the practice squad just in case something happens, but the Jaguars’ have too much depth defensively to keep any unnecessary pieces.

Running Back (3):

Travis Etienne
James Robinson
Snoop Conner
Ryquell Armstead

Mekhi Sargent finds himself the odd man out here, but in reality, he and Armstead are probably interchangeable. The Jaguars will likely need to carry four backs because Robinson is currently injured, but don’t be surprised to see them stick to just three when he comes back.

Receiver (5):

Christian Kirk
Marvin Jones Jr.
Laviska Shenault
Zay Jones
Laquon Treadwell

Jacksonville may opt to keep one more receiver, but as this list stands, it is already a deep snough group to find success in the air. Watch for them to keep at least one of the remaining wide-outs currently under contract tucked away on their practice squad.

Tight end (3):

Evan Ingram
Chris Manhertz
Dan Arnold

This is one of the team’s thinnest position groups, and they could end up only keeping two, especially if there are rumors swirling about potential diamonds in the rough getting the ax elsewhere as other teams cut down. Still, if left with just two, they’d likely keep one option on the back burner via practice squad.

Offensive tackle (4):

Cam Robinson
Jawaan Taylor
Walker Little
Will Richardson Jr.

Four tackles is a pretty safe bet here, though they may opt to keep an extra guard instead if they think someone has more…
