Nebraska falls while others climb

While it might not be at the top, with three Big Ten teams having already seen action, including in one head-to-head matchup, there’s already some upheaval in our latest Big Ten power rankings.

Nebraska was expected to be much improved in 2022, and with Casey Thompson under center and with some transfer receivers from Texas and LSU, it looked like it was a new regime in Lincoln. The Huskers moved down the field methodically early against Northwestern, but the same old Nebraska from a year ago reappeared to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.

Meanwhile, Northwestern’s offensive line and pass game looked much improved, as the Wildcats managed 528 yards of total offense, including 314 yards passing from Ryan Hilinski. Illinois ran roughshod all over Wyoming and had an impressive defensive performance, as expected.

These three teams moving from our last power ranking changed where some other teams stood in the bottom half. Here’s the latest update.

Indiana was idle, but we’re still not convinced that all is well in Bloomington after having lost every conference game. The Hoosiers will have an early chance to change their trajectory from a year ago, hosting 1-0 Illinois on Friday night.

We’re sorry for having faith in you, Nebraska. The defense was porous against what had been an anemic Northwestern offense, allowing Ryan Hilinski to throw for 314 yards while the run game went for 214 yards. Scott Frost’s odd decision to go for the onside kick while up 11 early in the second half absolutely snakebit the Huskers, as they didn’t score again.

The script played out as if it was written from a year ago with Nebraska suffering yet another one-possession loss. Given that…
