David Blough to sign with the Vikings practice squad

Less than 36 hours ago, David Blough was penciled in as the backup quarterback for the Detroit Lions. Now he’s headed off to sign to the practice squad of the rival Minnesota Vikings.

Blough was released on Wednesday in place of veteran Nate Sudfeld, who joined the Lions after being cut by the 49ers. Despite some talk of Blough sticking in Detroit on the Lions’ practice squad, the longtime backup instead chose to start fresh with a new team.

Blough had been with the Lions since 2019, when he was traded to Detroit by the Browns during roster cutdowns. He played in seven games for the Lions with nearly all his action coming in that first year in Detroit when Matthew Stafford and then backup Jeff Driskel each went down with injuries.

An uninspiring training camp and some critical mistakes in preseason play left Blough vulnerable. Being better than Tim Boyle wasn’t good enough for the Lions, and they opted to bring in Sudfeld as the No. 2 QB and only backup behind starter Jared Goff.
