5 things with Quinn Schulte following stellar debut

One of the biggest bright spots for the Iowa Hawkeyes in their season-opening 7-3 win over South Dakota State was the stellar play of safety Quinn Schulte.

Before last Saturday against the Jackrabbits, Schulte had five total tackles, one pass defensed and one interception to his name and career in Iowa City. Now, he’s got one start in the books and he looked like one of the best players on the field for the Hawkeyes.

The 6-foot-1, 208 pound safety from Xavier High School in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, made quite the starting impression, breaking up four passes. Afterwards, Schulte met with the media to discuss the Hawkeyes’ win and his play in the contest.

“I think just once you get that first play, first hit out of the game, you know, all the butterflies go away. Coach always talks about, ‘If you don’t have any butterflies, then it’s probably not a good thing that you don’t care.’ Once you get out there and you start playing, they definitely go away,” Schulte said.

One of the best series of plays in the game for Schulte came just before halftime. On back-to-back snaps, Schulte broke up a pair of passes intended for Jaxon Janke and Isaiah Davis to force a 44-yard field goal try. The kick was good, but it kept the game tied heading into the second half.

“Yeah, we were just trying to keep them as far back as we could for field goal range. Hopefully, try to make it difficult on their kicker, and, so, just trying to do what we could on the defensive side there,” Schulte said.
