Five reasons why Colorado won’t exit Air Force with a win

Air Force is a better team than TCU. There’s no easy way to say this going into CU’s Week 2 matchup with the Falcons, but there you go.

Partly based on the conference they play in, but mainly due to the fact they are a great team, Air Force is listed among the elites of college football in being one of only six teams projected to win all of their games in 2022.

And who could blame Vegas? Air Force will always be well coached under 16th-year leader Troy Calhoun, whose 2022 team could be one of his best.

We previously broke down five reasons why Colorado will win, but let’s now look at the other side of the equation:

Simply put, Air Force is currently the better overall team

I mentioned up top that Air Force is better than TCU. Well, given the line, it’s pretty clear that Air Force is better than CU as well. The Falcons are a talented bunch that could be in store for a special season.

The Falcons’ run game is elite

If Colorado struggled against TCU and its ground attack, then this does not bode well for the matchup against Air Force. Service schools have an offensive philosophy out of the early days of football that might be the sport’s purist form. All you need for a first down is three yards four times. Air Force will punch you in the mouth and not let up until the final whistle blows.

Air Force’s coaching staff is a rare sight these days

Troy Calhoun has been head coach at Air Force for 16 years now, and he was previously a QB for the Falcons during his playing days. His offensive coordinator, Mike Thiessen, has also been at AF for 16 years and has never played or coached anywhere else. Defensive coordinator Brian Knorr played QB at the school and is entering his 11th season as defensive coordinator. All that points to a coaching staff that produces consistent winning.
