Johnny Langan: Playing for Jersey

PISCATAWAY, N.J. – They do not come more Jersey than Johnny Langan.

Need a restaurant recommendation? He is quick to offer his allegiance to the Oakland Diner. Langan is Team Taylor Ham when it comes to the state’s most popular debate. If you borrowed his phone, the first thing you would see is a picture of Tony Soprano on his lock screen.

It all represents the team captain’s allegiance to the Garden State and playing for Rutgers football.

“New Jersey is the most densely-populated state in America, so that packs us all in together and makes us extremely competitive with one another,” Langan said. “We’re competitive in everything we do, and that makes us tough. That’s what we’re all about.”

New Jerseyans are full of opinions, but they can all agree Langan is as tough as they come. Now in his fourth season “On the Banks,” Langan has appeared in 35 consecutive games across several different positions. Officially listed as a tight end, Langan has lined up all over the field – allowing him to earn the nickname ‘Johnny Offense.’

Johnny Langan is as versatile an offensive football player as there is in America,” said head coach Greg Schiano over the summer at Big Ten Media Days. “He’ll line up all over the place for us. Best of all, he really does embody our program. He’s tough, he’s smart, and he’s all New Jersey.”

Langan has contributed to all three phases of the offense this fall. In the Scarlet Knights’ first four games, Langan has rushed for 120 yards, hauled in eight catches and a score, and threw a 43-yard touchdown in RU’s 66-7 victory over Wagner on Sept. 10 in Piscataway.

The trust the program has in Langan was never more apparent than in Rutgers’ 16-14 victory over Temple a week later at Lincoln Financial Field. Up by two points with just under three minutes to play, Langan rushed the ball five times during the Scarlet Knights’ final drive of the afternoon – which included a game-clinching first-down run on a critical third-down play to secure the win.

“I will do whatever my coaches ask of me to do to help my team,” Langan said. “Whatever role that may be, I’ll put my body on the line and my teammates before myself.”

Langan takes pride in being able to contribute wherever he can on the offensive side of the ball. In 37 career games at Rutgers, Langan has tallied more than 2,100 yards of total offense and 19 touchdowns (10 passing, eight rushing and one receiving).

His versatility earned him MVP honors last season at the TaxSlayer Gator Bowl versus No….
