You see the details in the gratefulness that he’s sure to exercise every day as a part of the Maryland program.
Beginning his collegiate career at Hutchinson Community College, the Mobile, Alabama native had no prior notion of just how many perks came with being a Division I football player. So when he first came to Maryland in 2020, he was blown away by all the resources he suddenly had at his disposal.
“I always tell people, that’s why I’m so grateful right now—all the things we get here, how we travel, the gear we get, the food we have, the tutors, just all the extra resources,” he said. “Coming from Hutchinson, Kansas, we didn’t really have anything even close to that there.”
“I pretty much ate cereal everyday (at Hutchinson),” he added. “And when I first got here, I didn’t even know we took planes to the games… Now, I’m really just trying to use those resources to the best of my ability so I have no regrets.”
You even see the details in his gameday traditions, most notably the $2 bill he places in the back of his shoulder pad every game.
The bill was a gift from Bennett’s aunt for his 22nd birthday.
“She knew I was number two and she’s super superstitious, so she gave it to me and said, ‘Don’t ever spend this,’” Bennett recalled. “So I was like alright, and taped it to the back of my jersey for good luck, and then I’ve just kept doing it.”
