Most will have anticipated the 49ers’ offense having their way with the Atlanta defense given Shanahan’s acumen as a play-caller.
Yet the 49ers were frustrated in the second half and Shanahan should be held responsible for their failures after the interval.
The Niners appeared to lack urgency, with a fourth-quarter drive that resulted in a turnover on downs for San Francisco lasting over eight minutes. That kind of poor clock management falls firmly on the shoulders of Shanahan.
Few coaches in the NFL can match Shanahan for the consistency in which he puts his players in positions to succeed, but an inability to find a way to deliver efficient rushing production combined with confusing clock management actively hurt the 49ers on Sunday.
