No one expected USC to hire a coach as good as Lincoln Riley last year. Before Mike Bohn made that remarkable hire in late November of 2021, USC fans rightly had no trust in the athletic department or school president Carol Folt to get this thing right.
The way the football program and athletic department had been mismanaged in previous years meant that even though Bohn was still relatively new to the athletic department, he hadn’t made a decision which sealed and secured the trust of the fan base. Folt’s allowance of missteps in the latter years of the Helton era made fans unwilling to think she knew the stakes of this hire.
Yet, USC was able to get Riley. Part of the story of that hire is that USC didn’t hire other candidates.
Guess what? Many of them are struggling:
No matter where you look in the box score, the reality is this: Penn State was pummeled in the trenches.

You mean the next level he keeps talking about but can’t attain? I now find myself despising him for not coaching responsibly for the team’s sake. He seems “distracted” again and had no clue his team was not psyched and ready to play. Arms folded on sidelines is not coaching!

Jim Harbaugh and his staff have outcoached the hell out of James Franklin and Penn State. This game is an even bigger blowout than the scoreboard shows.
