What They Are Saying: Boston College Week

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Coming off a 45-10 win against Army on Saturday Oct. 8 followed by a bye week, the No. 13 Wake Forest football team is set to face Boston College this Saturday, Oct. 22.

Ahead of the matchup, the Deacs met with the media to discuss the matchup and other news around the Wake Forest program.

Head Coach Dave Clawson

Opening statement

“We have a big weekend ahead, hosting B.C. It’s also our Hall of Fame weekend. I want to congratulate Ron Wellman, who was the athletic director who gave me the opportunity to come to Wake Forest. Bill Faircloth, who has probably been associated with more Wake Forest football games than anybody in history and has been such a great asset to our program. And Mike Elkins, who had such a great career here at quarterback. It’s kind of exciting that three people so closely associated with Wake Forest Football are going in.

“Wrapping up Army, it feels like forever ago. Good win. We needed a game like that on defense. I thought our linebackers played exceptionally well. They played us sort of this nickel defense that didn’t want to give up big plays, so we were able to run the football. That’s the key to our offense, to be balanced and run it against numbers that give you that edge.

“The bye week, we got a lot done. I don’t know if it was a good time or not. The last three weeks, we played some really good football. When you’re playing well, you don’t necessarily want a break. But it was good mentally for our players more than physically. It was fall break weekend and they had a lot of mid-terms leading up to fall break. That’s one of the things that makes Wake Forest unique, is the academic stress that our players are under. To give them more time to study and focus on exams is important. It coincided with fall break, so our guys were able to get out of there for a couple days to see family, see their girlfriend or go fishing. It gave us a chance as coaches to go out on the road and recruit. We took Saturday off and were right back at it Sunday.

“Boston College has been a very competitive football game for us. It starts with their head coach. I’m a big fan of Jeff Hafley. I’ve known Jeff for a number of…
