DURHAM – Duke sophomore safety Brandon Johnson received National Defensive Player of the Week honors from the Walter Camp Foundation, presented by 777 Partners, following the Blue Devils’ 45-21 win over Miami.

A 5-10, 180-pound native of Newton, N.C., Johnson spearheaded Duke’s defensive effort with a career-best and team-high nine tackles, 2.0 tackles for loss, 2.0 sacks, one caused fumble and one interception return for a touchdown. Duke held Miami to just 48 rushing yards and 21 points – 95.83 (143.83) and 9.67 (30.67) below its season averages, respectively.

Johnson is the sixth Duke player to earn Walter Camp National Player of the Week honors since 2004, and the first since safety Jeremy Cash did so in 2015.

For the season, Johnson ranks first on the team in sacks (3.5), tied for first in interceptions (2), second in tackles for loss (5.5), and tied for fourth in tackles (32). In addition, he’s added three pass breakups, two fumble recoveries and one forced fumble as Duke ranks first nationally in fumbles recovery and second in turnover margin.

Oregon’s quarterback Bo Nix was tabbed the National Offensive Player of the Week after completing 22-of-28 passes for 283 yards and five touchdowns as the Ducks defeated 12th-ranked UCLA, 45-30.

With the win, Duke improved to 5-3 overall and 2-2 in the ACC.  The Blue Devils have an open week before they travel to Boston College on Saturday, Nov. 4 at 7 p.m. (ESPN2).
