Pac-12 rankings might be different in a month, but they’re clear now

The Oregon Ducks are the clear best team in the Pac-12 Conference right now. We will see if they lift the Pac-12 championship trophy in several weeks in Las Vegas, but at the moment, their place atop the league is unquestioned. Utah lost on Oct. 8. USC lost on Oct. 15. UCLA lost on Oct. 22. Of course the Ducks are No. 1.

The real question is this: Who is No. 2?

This is where we come back to a basic discussion of rankings during a college football season. Remember: It’s not about the eye test and which team we think will win in a head-to-head matchup. It’s about the resume. The deeper we get into a conference season, the more conference standings matter as a differentiator.

Here we go with this week’s Pac-12 football rankings:

COLORADO

Back to reality for the Buffs after their win over Cal. That was short-lived. Oregon State hammered CU with a backup quarterback.

CAL

Losing to Colorado, then losing to Washington while Stanford won a conference game, keeps the Bears at No. 11.

ARIZONA

Arizona’s only Pac-12 win is against Colorado. This is why the U of A is No. 10 and not higher.

ARIZONA STATE

The Sun Devils lost to Stanford and have just one conference win. Stanford gets the nod over the Devils for No. 8.

STANFORD

The Cardinal don’t look good, but they have beaten Notre Dame and Arizona State in consecutive weeks while scoring just one total touchdown. Their resume is better than ASU’s.

WASHINGTON STATE

The Cougars have just one Pac-12 win. Kinda shocking, really.
