When it rains, it pours, and for Texas A&M, it’s been flooding for the last month or so. The Aggies are fresh off their third consecutive loss after falling to the South Carolina Gamecocks 30-24 in a game that the Aggies trailed from start to finish. As we stand today, the state of the program is at an all-time low.
Going into the matchup, both teams were coming off of their bye week, and the Aggies entered the weekend a as 3-point favorite, mostly due to their inspiring Week 6 performance in the loss against Alabama. But then the game began and after a Xavier Legette 100-yard Kickoff return, a field goal, and a 5-yard Christian Beal-Smith touchdown run, Texas A&M was down 17-0 and looking for answers right out of the gate.
After a brief second-quarter comeback aided by quarterback Haynes King, and Devon Achane, the Aggies entered halftime trailing 17-14 with momentum on their side, but South Carolina had other plans entirely, as Texas A&M would only muster 10 points in the second half, while the Gamecocks bled the clock while riding the hot hand of running back Marshawn Lloyd who ran for two touchdowns in the third and fourth quarter.
Without completely writing the Aggies off, the team isn’t in complete shambles, the offense is. Texas A&M’s defense forced a sack-fumble to set up one of two touchdowns, continuing their reliable play, but continuing to receive zero assistance from the offense drive after drive.
As questions regarding head coach Jimbo Fisher’s leadership ability and future with the program will likely resurface throughout the week, I’ll focus on the internal issues that can be fixed this season, as difficult as that may be. So, here are five things we learned from Texas A&M’s 30-24 loss to South Carolina.
