STARKVILLE – Mississippi State linebacker Sherman Timbs has been announced as a nominee for the 2022 Burlsworth Trophy, which is awarded to the most outstanding college football player who began his career as a walk-on.
Timbs, a graduate senior from Indianola, Miss., came to Mississippi State as a walk-on in 2017 and later earned a scholarship following the 2020 season. Timbs has appeared in 45 games for the Bulldogs since 2018, including seeing action in all eight games for State this season. He has totaled 27 tackles, including 10 solo stops, 2.5 tackles for loss and a sack.
Earlier this season, Timbs made his first career start in State’s road matchup at Kentucky where he registered a tackle in the game.
In the award’s 13th year, the trophy is named in honor of Brandon Burlsworth, former University of Arkansas walk-on and All-American offensive lineman. The Burlsworth Trophy award ceremony to honor the three finalists and to announce the 2022 winner will be held on Dec. 5 at 7 p.m. CT at Crystal Bridges Museum in Bentonville, Arkansas.
Mississippi State returns to action on Saturday, Nov. 5, against Auburn at Davis Wade Stadium in Starkville. Kickoff is set for 6:30 p.m. CT on ESPN2.
