It took a little bit but it finally hit Cadillac Williams what it means to be named Auburnโs head coach.
He sat down with Greg Ostendorf of AuburnTigers.com ahead of Auburnโs game against Mississippi State and discussed when it hit him and how it felt to be the head coach for Auburn.
It didnโt hit me until Tuesday morning. I got home. It was a long night Monday night, so I was running on a couple hours of sleep. I got up around 4:30 a.m. and got going, jumped in the shower and went to kiss my boys goodbye. I woke them up real quick and told them, โHey, Daddy is the head coach at Auburn.โ They were like, โYeah Daddy, I know youโre the head coach.โ And then he hit me. He said, โBut Daddy, itโs only temporary.โ I got a kick out of that. But then he mentioned something. He asked me, โDaddy, are you the first Black head coach?โ I said, โYes.โ That is when, I was driving to work this morning, where it hit me the magnitude of what this truly is. I donโt want to make this about me. All glory to God. But itโs such a huge deal and an honor. I am ecstatic.
He also talked about being Auburnโs first Black head coach.
ย Honestly, it means the world to me. I had the opportunity to play in the National Football League. That was one of my greatest accomplishments. But getting this opportunity, it has been heavy on me. Because there are so many people that have paved the way for myself to have this opportunity. Itโs almost unexplainable, like somebody needs to wake me up.
