Former Clemson receiver drafted fifth overall in XFL Draft

A former Tiger has found his new home in the XFL.

Wide receiver Martavis Bryant was selected in the first round of the XFL Draft by the Vegas Vipers as the fifth overall offensive skill player on Wednesday.

The XFL is set to re-launch in February of 2023 after its 2020 season was put to a quick halt at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Bryant’s latest landing spot comes after spending two seasons in the Canadian Football League with the Edmonton Elks and Toronto Argonaughts though the receiver did not appear in a game for either team as well as a short stint back in May with the Beasts in the same seven-on-seven Fan Controlled Football League (FCF) as his cousin and former Clemson quarterback Kelly Bryant.

Prior to his stints in the CFL and FCF, Bryant spent four seasons in the NFL with the Pittsburgh Steelers (3 seasons) and the then-Oakland Raiders (1 season). The South Carolina native was later suspended indefinitely by the NFL following a string of violations to the league’s substance abuse policy.

In his three seasons (2011-13) with the Clemson program, Bryant had 61 receptions for 1,020 yards and 13 touchdowns over the course of 37 games and 13 starts before being drafted by the Green Bay Packers in the fourth round (No. 118 overall pick) of the 2014 NFL Draft.
