Penn State sees no movement in new College Football Playoff ranking

With one final week of the regular season still to be played, the College Football Playoff race is coming down the final stretch. And while Penn State has been in the rearview mirror by a considerable distance for some time, the rankings still mean something for Penn State’s bowl projections. And, unfortunately, the updated rankings this week are not too promising for the Nittany Lions.

Penn State remained at No. 11 in this week’s College Football Playoff rankings. They remain just behind No. 10 Tennesee, who tumbled five spots after a blowout loss at South Carolina. And Oregon jumped up three spots to No. 9 after their win over Utah.

Coming in at No. 11 in the final rankings before the last regular season game may be slightly concerning for Penn State’s New Years Six hopes. This ranking would, if it holds, would likely block Penn State from being selected as an at-large option for the Cotton Bowl and makes it incredibly difficult to slide into the Orange Bowl.

The shot at the Rose Bowl is in the hands of the selection committee and whether or not they welcome two Big Ten teams in the College Football Playoff, leaving the Big Ten’s spot in Pasadena vacant for the highest-ranked Big Ten team available.
