20th anniversary of 2002 USC – Notre Dame feels very appropriate

Over the past few years, the Notre Dame-USC game didn’t have much attention. The Trojans had been struggling, and the Irish struggled at times as well.

But, the two programs are both back to where they want to be, and it’s only the beginning for new head coaches Marcus Freeman and Lincoln Riley. So, finally, the Notre Dame-USC game matters a ton again (h/t Nick Shepkowski of Fighting Irish Wire).

“We’ve asked for it for a long time and this really feels like its the start of something special,” Shepkowski wrote. “Two of college football’s proudest programs appear headed for simultaneous sustained success. Playoff appearances and perhaps national championship chances will soon be on the line for both teams when they meet.

“This is what we wanted. It’s what we got. And I couldn’t be more excited.”

This game recalls the 2002 USC-Notre Dame battle, in which Carson Palmer sealed the Heisman Trophy with a win over a good-but-not-great Notre Dame team.

Could history repeat itself with Caleb Williams, 20 years later?
