The Nebraska Cornhuskers have found their new defensive coordinator!
According to ESPN’s Pete Thamel, they are hiring Syracuse defensive coordinator Tony White. White had multiple offers during the cycle, per Thamel.
White deploys a 3-3-5 defense. Under his leadership, the Orange were 35th in the FBS in opponent points per game (22.7).
White has extensive coaching experience. Prior to joining Syracuse, he served as the defensive coordinator at Arizona State. He also had past stints at UCLA, New Mexico, and San Diego State.
The Cornhuskers struggled defensively in 2022. They were 79th in the FBS in opponent points per game (27.6). In addition, they allowed over 400 yards of total offense in each of their first three games.
Sources: Nebraska is hiring Syracuse DC Tony White as the school’s next defensive coordinator. He runs a 3-3-5 defense and has emerged as one of the top ACC coordinators.

Tony White to Nebraska would be one of the rare members of Matt Rhule’s staff with no previous experience working for Rhule. But he’s a UCLA guy (Rhule was briefly at UCLA before) from El Paso with over a decade on the West Coast (SDSU & ASU) before coming to Syracuse in 2020.
