Rutgers football got another strong pick-up in the transfer portal on Tuesday. And once again, the addition comes on the defensive side of the ball.
Minnesota safety Michael Dixon announced on Tuesday afternoon that he will be transferring to Rutgers. The move reunites Dixon with Rutgers defensive coordinator Joe Harasymiak, who served for two years in the same role at Minnesota prior to his move to New Jersey.
This is a quality move for Rutgers at a position of need.
Last season, his third at Minnesota, Dixon had a career high in tackles (28), tackles for a loss (2.5) and passes defended (3). Due to playing in 2020 during the COVID-19 season, Dixon comes to Rutgers with two years or eligibility left.
In the season finale, a 23-16 Minnesota win at Wisconsin, he posted a career-best seven tackles.
It is the second transfer portal addition to the Rutgers football roster. The other commitment, Eric Rogers, is also a defensive back.
Rogers played for Northern Illinois.
The addition of Dixon is a big one for Rutgers, and likely ends their movement in the transfer portal. Dixon likely slots into a starting role in the Minnesota secondary, replacing the rock-solid Christian Izien.
