The UCLA family was saddened to learn of the recent passing of Don Riley, a longtime assistant on many of Coach Terry Donahue’s best Bruin football teams (1976-1987).

Riley, a member of Coach Donahue’s original staff at UCLA, coached football at the college and high school level for four decades and served in Westwood from 1976-1987. He was on the coaching staff of three Rose Bowl-winning Bruin squads which posted wins over Michigan (1983), Illinois (1984) and Iowa (1986). Nine of the UCLA teams he coached on finished either first or second in the conference while the 1982 and 1987 squads both equaled the school record with 10 wins. At UCLA, he coached along the offensive line and worked with the placekickers. He helped mold players such as Brent Boyd, Larry Lee, Blake Wingle and Norm Johnson for future NFL success.

Riley, an all-state high school quarterback in Kentucky, also served as an assistant coach at Oklahoma State (1972-75) and at Vanderbilt (1966-71). He was named head football coach at his alma mater of East Tennessee State in 1988. Riley also coached high school football in Kentucky and Tennessee.

Services will be held on January 14 at Crossline Community Church in Laguna Hills, Calif. at 2 p.m.
