KTR gets sizable NIL donation to honor Bob Mulcahy

A gift was made to a Rutgers Name, Image and Likeness (NIL) collective on Wednesday to help the football program’s push towards credibility in the Big Ten.

And that donation was made to honor one of the biggest reasons why Rutgers is in the Big Ten in the first place.

The Knights of the Raritan (KTR) received a $25,000 anonymous gift on Wednesday in memory of Bob Mulcahy. The former Rutgers athletic director, who passed away last February, was a pivotal piece in the rebuilding of Rutgers football. It was Mulcahy who hired Greg Schiano in 2000, setting in motion one of the most dramatic rebuilds in college football history.

The $25,000 gift in honor of Mulcahy is part of KTR’s push to raise $1 million for NIL purposes. Six donors have pledged to match $500,000 in donations over the span of a month, with the goal to raise $1 million towards NIL initiatives for Rutgers athletics.

“What was striking to us was that this was someone who didn’t have a direct connection to the university or the athletic department, but did have a significant relationship with Bob wanted to make a gift,” said Jon Newman, president of KTR and the founder of The Hodges Partnership, an award-winning public relations firm based in Virginia.

“And (this individual was) a big enough football fan to know the significance of his impact on the program.”

“The other thing important to this person was that if people knew this was important to Bob, other people might follow suit.”

In an update on Dec. 29, KTR announced that it had raised over $268,000 to date. In recent days, a $25,000 matching gift from Learn to Lead CEO Dave Anderson was met specifically to fund men’s basketball.
