Friday afternoon saw Nebraska offensive coordinator Marcus Satterfield meet with the media. The new OC of the Cornhuskers discussed several topics, but the identity of the offense and the type of players needed to help create that identity were at the top of everyone’s mind.
It would be safe to say that Nebraska has not had a cohesive identity on offense since the 2014 season. That year the Huskers ran a spread option scheme under the direction of coordinator Tim Beck. On the field, they were led by Tommy Armstorng Jr. (2695 yards throwing along with 22 TDs and 12 INTs & 705 yards running with six rushing touchdowns) and Ameer Abdullah (1,611 yards rushing & 19TD).
Since Beck’s final season at Nebraska in 2014, the Huskers have had three play callers and five offensive coordinators. It’s hard to find any cohesion as a program when you’ve shifted between three very different styles of offenses in eight years.
Our three play callers are Danny Langsdorf, Scott Frost, and Mark Whipple. While Langsdorf, now the OC at Temple, called plays, the system was installed under the direction of Head Coach Mike Riley.
