In his short time as the head coach of Nebraska football, Matt Rhule has made two things very clear. He likes to make unconventional hires, and he likes his unconventional hires to come from the state of Texas.
Rhule has again done it by hiring Dr. Susan Elza as his chief of staff. Elza has been the athletic director of the University Interscholastic League for the last seven years. The UIL is the governing body of Texas High School Athletics.
Elza will join fellow Texan and former Arlington Martin High School head football coach Bob Wager at Nebraska. Wager is a respected coach in Texas high school football. Over the last 23 seasons, he has a 176-93 record and will join the Cornhuskers as a tight ends coach.
Rhule has hired high school coaches before, with the most successful of those hires being then-Texas high school coach Joey McGuire. McGuire was brought on as a tight ends coach when Rhule was at Baylor and is now the head football coach at Texas Tech. His son Garrett McGuire has joined Nebraska’s staff as a wide receivers coach.
Elza has been with UIL for the last seven years. She is expected to resign from her position and join Matt Rhule’s staff in the coming weeks.
