Jack Campbell won’t need much of an introduction when he meets with teams at the upcoming NFL Combine. By now, everyone knows who the 2022 Butkus Award winner is.
Still, the 6-foot-5, 246 pound linebacker will take all of the positive press clippings with him that he can to Indianapolis for the combine.
How about this one? No linebacker was better in pass coverage than Jack Campbell in 2022. In a pass-happy league that values coverage abilities more than ever before, Campbell should be a valued commodity.
Pro Football Focus illustrated this point recently, sharing Campbell’s coverage grade. The Cedar Falls, Iowa, native finished with a nation-leading 92.9 coverage grade.

Campbell was one of five linebackers nationally to post a coverage grade of 90.0 or greater. He led that quintet of Pittsburgh’s Shayne Simon, James Madison’s Jailin Walker, Memphis’ Xavier Cullens and Air Force’s TD Blackmon.
Campbell became the Hawkeyes first Butkus Award winner in program history. He was also named an unanimous consensus All-American and was the recipient of the William V. Campbell Trophy.
Campbell took home the biggest defensive awards from the Big Ten, too. He was honored as the Nagurski-Woodson Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year and the Butkus-Fitzgerald Big Ten Linebacker of the Year.
Campbell registered 128 tackles, 5.5 tackles for loss, three passes defensed, a pair of interceptions and one sack. He had a pick six against Minnesota that was wiped out when officials ruled that he stepped out of bounds. Video replay showed that Campbell never did, but it wasn’t a reviewable play.
For his career, Campbell racked up 305 total tackles, 15 passes defensed, 13.5 tackles for loss, five interceptions, three forced fumbles, three sacks and scored one defensive touchdown.
