Following the 2022 college football season, the North Carolina Tar Heels had some holes to fill on the roster.
Most notably, the Tar Heels had to replace their two top receivers with Josh Downs leaving early for the NFL and Antoine Green running out of eligibility. While they arenβt inexperienced at the position, getting that production back will be tough.
But one player is ready to step into that role and take over as the top receiver in the offense.
Former Kent State standout Devontez Walker transferred to North Carolina this offseason and will step into that role for the Tar Heels. On Monday, ESPN released its list of the top newcomers for each team in the publicationβs early Top 25. And Walker was named the player for the Tar Heels:
The Tar Heels lose their top two receivers inΒ Josh DownsΒ andΒ Antoine Green, so it makes sense why North Carolina would bring inΒ Kent StateΒ transferΒ Devontez Walker. WithΒ Drake MayeΒ back for another season, he will be looking for a new go-to target. Walker is from the Charlotte area and has worked his way up to reach this point β starting his career atΒ NC CentralΒ before transferring to Kent State. Last season, he was an All-MAC selection after catching 58 passes for 921 yards and a conference-leading 11 touchdowns. βΒ Adelson
In addition to Walker, UNC also welcomes in former Georgia Tech standout Nate McCollum as a transfer. The duo will look to help replace that production and be the go-to guys for quarterback Drake Maye in this offense.
