One of the primary narratives surrounding the Texas A&M football program since the 2022 season went awry, has been the idea that there would be a mass exodus from College Station via the transfer portal before the 2023 season.
So when over two dozen players from the 2022 team entered the portal in the first window, many national pundits and rival fans were eager to take victory laps.
But it turns out, according to ESPN, the Aggies are actually returning more production to their team in 2023 than any other school in the SEC. In fact the only conference school with either an offense or defense that is returning more production than A&M, is the Missouri defense.
At the national level the Aggies are 7th in the country, with an 80% returning production score overall.
SEC teams national rank in percentage of returning production for 2023, via @ESPN_BillC:
7. Texas A&M
9. Mizzou
28. Auburn
30. Ole Miss
32. LSU
58. Vandy
69. Tennessee
73. Kentucky
80. Georgia
91. MSU
102. South Carolina
106. Arkansas
107. Florida
125. Alabama— Connor O’Gara (@cjogara) February 7, 2023
This underscores and supports a narrative that many close to the A&M program have expressed, that the 2022 season went about as bad as could be imagined, and the transfer portal exits were going to hurt the depth of the team. But that most of the important parts of the team, the ones Jimbo Fisher and his staff would be hoping to build around in the future, would be returning and that the Aggies, led by Conner Weigman at quarterback, would have a very good chance at a major bounce back in 2023.
