Nebraska’s WR Coach ‘we want to be the toughest.. team in the country’

The youngest coach in the Power Five met with the media on Thursday. Garret McGuire is Nebraska’s new wide receivers coach.

The 24-year-old coached with Rhule for two seasons with the Carolina Panthers. He played for Rhule while the Cornhusker’s head coach was at Baylor.

Garret’s father is Joey McGuire, the current head coach of the Texas Tech Red Raiders. The elder McGuire went 8-5 his first year in Lubbock and took his program to a bowl game.

The receiver’s coach opened his media session, talking about some of the coaches who have helped him over the years.

“I got really lucky being around the people I’ve been around. You talk about Joe Brady, Ben Macadoo… guys that really poured into me. Taught me from a young age how to coach. How to treat people. Obviously, you see, my dad and Coach Rhule are the biggest influences on me. I’m probably a little bit ahead of the curveball being younger but like I said, we’re just going at it.”

On how he is attacking the day

I’m attacking it every way I can. It’s about relationships. I want to know what they’re like. I want to know what their parents are like. I want to know their classes. I got a big sign on my board right now of a guy not doing well in school. Every time he sees me, I just point at the board. He knows I care and that’s all that matters. It’s like that old Nick Saban quote, “they don’t care how much you know until they know you care.”
