Ranking top 10 all-time offenses

Offense. Offense. Offense.

To many, it’s the most exciting part of the game. Quarterbacks are the stars, and wide receivers and running backs get all the highlight reels on YouTube. Here, we’ll be looking at the 10 best offenses in LSU history.

This was tricky. The game has changed, and so has the way offenses are evaluated. Prolific passers and scorers are much more common now than they were in the 20th century. Yards come a dime a dozen now.

Because of that, I’ve tried my best to adjust for era. I didn’t just use total yards and points, but I also looked at how the units performed in big games and the individual talent as well. If an offense was also good in back-to-back years and featured several of the same players, I used them once in the interest of variety.

Here’s how it all breaks down.

LSU went 10-1-1 in 1987 behind QB Tommy Hodson, who led the SEC in passing yards and was second in touchdowns.

The unit ranked sixth nationally in Sports Reference’s ratings model (OSRS), tenth in adjusted scoring and was second in the conference in points per game.

RB Harvey Williams was a 1,000-yard rusher and WR Wendell Davis fell just short of the century mark catching the ball. This offense also featured Rogie Magee, Tony Moss, Brian Kinchen and Sam Martin.

While they did go 10-1-1, they struggled in some games against ranked opponents, but a solid unit nonetheless and one of the best offenses Baton Rouge has seen,

This was a high-scoring year in the SEC. LSU ranked just fifth in the conference in points per game, but on a national level, LSU still posted some of the country’s top numbers.

The offense ranked eighth in OSRS and ninth in adjusted scoring. Under center, LSU had the uber-talented Bert Jones and a star at wide receiver in Andy Hamilton.
