Nebraska Strength Coach: ‘no substitute for strength’

Nebraska Football strength and conditioning coach Corey Campbell met with the media on Wednesday afternoon. The coach talked during his media availability about the importance of old-school strength training.

“At the end of the day, 45 pounds is 45 pounds, right?” Campbell said. “You’ve got to pick up a barbell and you’ve got to train. I’m a firm believer that there is no substitute for strength and no excuse for the lack of it. From that standpoint, we’re going to get on the barbell and we’re going to train.”

He also went into to detail on his methods and the role his staff plays in the development of the players.

“In the weight room, through training we’re tearing our bodies down. How they regenerate and become the athletes that they need to be from a training standpoint, that takes place with recovery, regen, sleep, nutrition, hydration. So when we look at developing the athletes here, it’s a holistic approach. You have myself as a strength and conditioning coach. And on my staff you have individuals with different niches. You also have to look at the nutritionist, you have to look at the sports scientist, you have to look at the athletic medicine staff because it takes a village to train these athletes and get them to perform at a high level on Saturdays.”

“The one thing I will say about them is when I walked in the door at the end of November, they were eager to work. That’s something that I value. Their willingness to be coached, that’s been huge. So my initial impressions of them was very well and they received me very well. Anything I ask of those guys, from an attention to detail standpoint and effort standpoint, they’ve done. So I’m proud of them.”
