When Nebraska begins spring practice on Monday, they’ll also play host to the son of a former Heisman Trophy finalist. Willis McGahee IV announced that he would be at the first practice of the spring session.

McGahee IV is a four-star edge rusher from Columbus High School in Miami. Last season he had 80 tackles, 13 sacks, and five forced fumbles for Palmetto High.

The recruit’s father had his own successful collegiate career and even a run-in with the Cornhuskers. Willis McGahee III played for the University of Miami from 2000-2002.

He won a National Championship as a member of the 2001 team. That squad defeated Nebraska in the 2002 Rose Bowl 37-14.

The 2002 season would see McGahee shatter the school’s record book, setting marks in carries, yards, average, and touchdowns. In 13 games, the Miami native would carry the ball 282 times for 1,753 yards and 28 touchdowns.

McGahee would also be a finalist for the 2002 Heisman Trophy. The running back finished fourth behind Penn State RB Larry Johnson, Iowa QB Brad Banks, and winner USC QB Carson Palmer.

The Buffalo Bills selected McGahee III with the 23rd overall pick in the 2003 NFL draft. He played in the NFL from 2003 to 2013, spending time with Buffalo, Baltimore, Denver, and Cleveland.

This will be McGahee IV’s first visit to Nebraska. He currently has offers from other programs like Michigan, Auburn and Tennessee.
