Raiola wants to take control of recruiting in-state

For some of the more high-profile schools, keeping recruits in-state has become a has become a key to success. Since taking over as Nebraska’s head coach, Matt Rhule has emphasized recruiting in-state prospects.

“I think you always start at home. The key to long-term success is for every fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh-graders in the state of Nebraska to grow up dreaming of playing out here. They have to see other kids just like them, do that. As I went through this process of evaluating this job if I would be a good fit here, I got to know these players. I watched them. I wanted the local kids to stay here and play here at Nebraska. We got a lot of them and a couple we didn’t get, but the ones that we got came for the right reasons. They want to be here. We can’t take everybody, but the ones we got are definitely good enough, and they are going to fight for their university.”

Of the Top Ten rated players in the state of Nebraska for the class of 2023, seven have signed with the Cornhuskers. The most high profile of these recruits is wide receiver, Malachi Coleman.

When looking ahead to 2024, only quarterback Daniel Kaelin has made a hard commitment and that was to Missouri. For a school like Nebraska, it’s critical to keep top prospects in-state.

Nebraska offensive line coach Donovan Raiola is the uncle to the nation’s top recruit QB Dylan Raiola. He’s also the lead recruiter for the Cornhuskers in the Arizona region.

Raiola highlighted why the southwest has recently grabbed his attention.

“There’s a lot of talent out there. It’s a melting pot of people, right? The more you’re there and you’re going around and you’re going to different schools, you see talent all over the place. And really, that’s the Phoenix area right now. You’ve got Tucson, you’ve got different spots in Arizona, but in that Phoenix area, there’s a lot of talent,” explained Raiola.
