Nebraska Football Looking back at the Husker HC career of Frank Solich

Although his time in charge in Lincoln lasted only six seasons, former Nebraska head football coach Frank Solich had a lasting impact on the Husker program. Before becoming a head coach, he spent 19 seasons as an assistant coach under Hall of Famer Tom Osborne.

In those 19 seasons, he would help Nebraska win 11 conference titles and three National Championships (1994, 1995, 1997). Solich would become the head coach in 1998 following Osborne’s retirement.

He also served as his offensive coordinator for the first five years of his tenure. During those five years, his teams would continue to run the Power-I Option offense made famous under Tom Osborne.

Solich’s offenses finished in the Top Ten of total rushing offense each of those first five seasons. That included back-to-back seasons in which the Cornhuskers led the nation in rushing (2000 & 2001).

He would win nine games or more in five of his six seasons and finished in the Top Ten three different times. However, Solich would be dismissed following a 9-3 regular season record in 2003 by then-Athletic Director Steve Pederson in a move that remains controversial to this day.

He would finish his career at Nebraska with an overall record of 58-19. Scroll below for a detailed look at each of Frank Solich’s six seasons as Nebraska’s head coach.
