Nebraska football special teams coordinator Ed Foley met with members of the media following Tuesday’s spring practice session. Foley’s spending his first season as the coordinator for the Huskers after being with head coach Matt Rhule as the Carolina Panthers’ assistant special teams coach. Foley also served on Matt Rhule’s staff at Temple and Baylor.
The coordinator gave the media an update in regards to the current update to the special team’s unit, along with some players and his coaching.
“The group’s been good,” Foley said. “They listen. They want to be good. They play hard. That usually leads to good special teams play. I think things will be pretty good when we’re all set and done. For me, I’m just trying to learn about the players and their attributes. It’s an ongoing process. But it’s been good and fun.”
Thoughts on kicker Timmy Bleekrode
“Timmy’s a pro,” Foley said. “He goes out there everyday with something to work on, which I really like about him. He’ll work on something and we’ll look at it real closely. Then when it comes time, we’ll look at the film. But he comes in ready to work everyday.”
Stuff from NFL that he wants to use at Nebraska
“When you’re learning in the NFL, you’re learning from the highest levels,” Foley said. “You learn what’s important to keep your job, the little nuances. Like today we focused on snappers getting their heads up so they can get into protection quicker. That’s something I wouldn’t have talked about much three or four years ago.”
Billy Kemp’s transition to returner
“He’s a worker,” Foley said. “He wants to be challenged. He’s working on his craft all the time. He brings juice to the return game. But it’s not just him. We got a lot of players who can return the ball. But Billy’s certainly one of them.”
