Offenses weren’t what they were today, but by the 80s, the sport was starting to change. Defense got harder.

After allowing 336 yards per game the year prior, the 1982 defense allowed just 246.1 per game.

LSU ranked second in the SEC in scoring defense this year. The Tigers held ranked Alabama and Florida teams to 10 and 13 points, respectively.

The defense was led by linebacker Al Richardson, who against South Carolina set LSU’s single-game tackle record with 21.

Against Ole Miss, LSU allowed minus-50 rushing yards. That’s also a single-game program record.

LSU finished the year with nine wins and head coach Jerry Stovall was named Walter Camp Coach of The Year.
