What Deonte Banks brings to Giants

🔹 Schoen met Banks for the first time at the NFL Scouting Combine, where he made a lasting impression. “Just personality. He’s a personable individual. Football intellect was good. Very good understanding of [Maryland’s] defense.”

🔹 Schoen and Daboll set out to close the talent gap in the division, and Banks is a part of that process. “This is a passing league,” Daboll said. “We have a tough division and Te, he’s a tall, lengthy, press, man-to-man corner who we had graded high, and happy we have him.”

🔹 Schoen talked to Jaguars general manager Trent Baalke earlier in the day and said, “Hey, I don’t know if there may be a scenario where I’m worried about somebody coming behind us to this position, would you be open to it, these would be the parameters?” They stayed in communication throughout the draft.

🔹 The Giants play a variety of defenses in their system, but Banks has played a heavy amount of press man-to-man coverage. “He’s strong,” Daboll said. “He’s got good length. He’s got good quickness, good speed. And now we’ll just throw him in the mix with our guys and good to have him.”

🔹 Daboll was asked about Banks’ lack of interceptions in college. “Look, he was around the ball quite a bit. There was a lot of pass breakups. He can match receivers. Again, it’s new for all these young guys coming in, but I think he’s a good player. I’m glad we got him.”

🔹 The Round 1 move will not effect possible trades coming on the second or third days. “We still have our premium, second, third, fourth,” Schoen said. “We are in good shape from that standpoint if we want to move around.”

🔹 Banks said his confidence to is “really high. I’m just ready to get to work.”

🔹 Banks clicked with the Giants’ staff in their pre-draft meetings. “They have a unique kind of character. I loved them. It was a great meeting. … When I came out here, it felt like it was my home. I felt like that. Everybody was cool. It just felt like my home. It felt like family.”

🔹 Banks knew if he made it to 25, the Giants would be the team to draft him.

🔹 Banks listed Jalen Ramsey and Marshon Lattimore as cornerbacks he admires. “I love how they play.”
