The first live action inside Autzen Stadium took place on Saturday afternoon with the Oregon spring game taking place.
There were many highlights and a large number of things that need to be improved before the season starts in September. In front of an estimated 45,000 fans, Bo Nix and Troy Franklin led the green team, while Ty Thompson, Tez Johnson and Kris Hutson showed out for the yellow team. The defense had a stellar day, with the secondary showing improvement from last year.
After the scrimmage, head coach Dan Lanning met with media members to discuss how the day went and where the team can improve going forward. Here are some of the most notable quotes from that press conference.
Opening Statement
Lanning: “I thought it was a great turnout. Our crowd was amazing as always, really enjoyed the fact that you got to, you know, really appreciate the military today and what they do for our country. But, overall, happy with the performance. There’s certainly some things we want to clean up and fix, but I thought you get a good indication of a little bit of the product this season and where we can get better before.”
Bo Nix
Question: Was the plan always for Bo Nix to play late into the fourth quarter?
Lanning: “Yes that was the plan. We were going to play football today and try to get better at football.”
Honorary Coaches
Question: What was it like developing a relationship with Marcus Mariota and Jevon Holland as the guest coaches?
Lanning: “I asked them some questions about their experience here as players and reflecting back on it. You know, we got to meet a little bit. Those are two outstanding men. Not just outstanding football players, but outstanding men and they’re a great you know, a great piece of our program. They’ve built something special here so we’re grateful that they came back.”
