Nebraska’s class of 2024 added a member on Friday afternoon after landing a commitment from three-star athlete Keelan Smith. The Missouri native chose the Cornhuskers over his in-state Tigers, Iowa, Arkansas, and Kansas State.
Smith has connections to the Cornhusker program. His father, Neil Smith, played for Nebraska from 1985 to 1987 and was an All-American selection for the ’87 season.
The elder Smith was the second overall pick in the 1988 NFL draft by the Kansas City Chiefs. He would play in the NFL from 1988 to 2000, spending time with the Chiefs, Broncos, and Chargers.
Neil Smith would have not only a long career but an impactful one too. He was a 6x Pro Bowl selection, 3x Second-team All-Pro, a First-team All-Pro for the ’93 season, and a 2x time Super Bowl champion with the Denver Broncos. In addition, Smith was a member of the NFL’s 90s All-Decade Team and a Kansas City Chief Hall of Fame.
As for the recruit, Keelan Smith is a wide receiver for his high school but is projected to play tight end due to his frame of 6-foot-3 and 200 pounds. Last season as a Junior, he made 50 catches for 850 yards and 11 TDs in 12 games.
Smith’s commitment marks the sixth commitment to Nebraska’s class of 2024.
