Heading into the 2023 season, Clemson starting running back, Will Shipley, is the top running back in the ACC.
Shipley has been the focal point of the Tigers’ offense since he burst onto the scene when he took over his freshman year and has been one of the most exciting players Clemson fans have seen recently. Replacing arguably the best ACC running back of all time, Travis Etienne, was challenging. Still, Swinney and the Tigers did an excellent job when they landed Shipley.
In many ways, Shipley is the heart of the Tigers’ offense, and 2023 should be no different. We expect an even better season from Clemson’s star running back in 2023 with the addition of 2022 Broyles Award winner Garrett Riley and starting quarterback Cade Klubnik gaining more comfortability under center.
College Sports Wire regional editor Patrick Conn recently released an article ranking the ACC’s starting running backs, with Shipley ranking No.1 ahead of Florida State’s Trey Benson. Here’s what Conn had to say about the star running back.
2022 Stats:
Att | Yards | YPA | TDs | Rec | Yards | YPR | TDs |
210 | 1,182 | 5.6 | 15 | 38 | 242 | 6.4 | 0 |
Why The Ranking:
Shipley is the clear No. 1 running back coming into the 2023 campaign for the Clemson Tigers. His workout should be similar to last season based on how new offensive coordinator Garrett Riley deployed his backs at TCU in 2022. Shipley might even have better numbers than last year when he led the ACC with 15 rushing scores.
It is interesting to see Conn’s decisiveness saying Shipley is the clear best running back in the ACC, but I disagree. Trey Benson finished as expected, No.2 on the list, but I assume some in the country see him as the ACC’s top running back.
Shipley can potentially be one of, if not the top running back in the country this season, competing with Michigan’s Blake Corum and Ole Miss’ Quinshon Judkins for the top spot.
