Australia native is one of 10 semifinalists for the honor given to the nation’s top punter

SALT LAKE CITY – University or Utah punter Jack Bouwmeester has been named one of 10 semifinalists for the 2023 Ray Guy Award, presented annually to the top punter in college football.

Entering Week 12, Bouwmeester leads the Pac-12 Conference and ranks No. 14 nationally with an average punt distance of 45.6 yards. He and the Utah punt team rank 12th in FBS with a net punt average of 42.18 yards, a metric that accounts for punt distance, opponent return yards and touchbacks.

Named to The Athletic’s Midseason All-America Second Team, Bouwmeester has sent 15 punts for 50-plus yards this season after having just one such boot in all of 2022. It’s the most by a Utah punter since 2018 and includes Bouwmeester’s career-long of 64 yards in the season-opener vs. Florida.

Bouwmeester has been named to the Ray’s 8 weekly honor roll three times (UCLA, Oregon State and Oregon) and took home Pac-12 Special Teams Player of the Week twice (Florida, Weber State). His performance vs. Florida saw Bouwmeester boot three of his six punts for 60-plus yards, the first such feat by a Ute since 2014.

He has served as Utah’s starting punter since 2022 and has appeared in 24 career games, averaging 42.6 yards over his two seasons as a Ute. He was rated as the No. 6 punting prospect by 247Sports out of Bendigo Catholic College while trailing with ProKick Australia.
