A year from now when the College Football Playoff jumps to 12 teams, Ohio State’s would not only have advanced but the Buckeyes would have hosted a first-round game. Instead they will settle for a New Year’s Six game that won’t even be played on New Year’s Day. The first couple of days of December were brutal for the Buckeyes, who watched Michigan win the Big Ten, were not selected for the playoff a day later and then saw quarterback Kyle McCord enter the transfer portal the following morning.
McCord, who threw for over 3,000 yards and 24 touchdowns this season, will likely be replaced by backup quarterback Devin Brown in the Cotton Bowl. Brown went just 12 of 22 for 197 yards with two touchdowns and an interception in mop-up duty this season. Ohio State opened as a 6.5-point favorite at BetMGM, but the spread was down to OSU +3 following McCord’s announcement.
Even with the best receiver in the college game – Marvin Harrison Jr. – in its huddle, McCord’s absence will likely mean the Buckeyes will rely more on running back TreVeyon Henderson, who rushed for 854 yards and 11 touchdowns this season despite missing three games with an undisclosed injury. Henderson eclipsed the 100-yard mark four times this year, with a high of 162 against Wisconsin.
