The Wolverines will be making their third straight appearance in the College Football Playoff but first as the No. 1 seed. They lost in the semifinals as No. 2 seeds in each of the last two years. This will be Alabama’s eighth appearance since the playoff format was established in 2015. The Tide have won three titles in that timeframe. Michigan is just 1-6 in bowls under Harbaugh, while Alabama is 6-1 in the College Football Playoff semifinals.
Michigan finished as the regular season No. 1 in the country at scoring defense (9.46 ppg) and is trying to become the first team to finish the season allowing less than 10 points per game since the 2011 Crimson Tide. However, the Alabama defense had two players – linebacker Dallas Turner and corner Kool-Aid McKinstry – selected to the the USA TODAY Sports college football All-America First Team.
