DURHAM – Duke head football coach Manny Diaz announced Saturday that quarterback Maalik Murphy has signed a financial aid agreement to attend the institution and join the Blue Devil gridiron program.
Murphy will enroll at Duke in this month after spending two seasons at the University of Texas. He played in seven career games, making two starts, and finished 40-of-71 (.563) passing for 477 yards with three touchdowns against three interceptions during his Longhorn tenure. Additionally, he registered five passes of 20-plus yards, including a career-high 47-yard pass and 37-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Adonai Mitchell against Kansas State in 2023. With Murphy as the starting quarterback this past season, the Longhorns went 2-0 with victories over BYU and Kansas State.
Murphy will have three seasons of eligibility remaining beginning with the 2024 campaign.
A 6-5, 238-pound native of Inglewood, Calif., Murphy was charted as a four-star prospect by ESPN.com, Rivals.com and 247Sports.com. He also was ranked the No. 8, No. 9, and No. 12 pro-style quarterback nationally and the No. 7, No. 14, and No. 17 prospect from the state of California by Rivals.com, 247Sports.com, and ESPN.com, respectively.
While at Junipero Serra High School, he helped the Cavaliers to a 21-11 ledger and two appearances in the playoffs, including a 2021 CIF Division 1-A state championship. During his senior season, Murphy led Serra to a 10-1 record in its final 11 games with its only loss coming by one point in overtime. He completed 202-of-321 passes (.629) for 2,954 yards with 22 touchdowns and 10 interceptions…
