Lions’ Alualu, Goff Visit 49ers; Mekari’s Ravens To Host Chiefs
Three former California football players – Tyson Alaulu, Jared Goff and Patrick Mekari – are on active rosters of NFL teams that will play in conference championship games next Sunday. Alualu and Goff will be back in the Bay Area with Detroit to face San Francisco in the NFC Championship Game, while Mekari and Baltimore will host Kansas City in the AFC Championship.
Goff led Detroit to the NFC Championship Game for only the second time in franchise history on Sunday by completing 30-of-43 passes for 287 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions for a 103.5 rating in the Lions’ 31-23 home victory over Tampa Bay in the NFC Divisional Round. The victory was Detroit’s second of the 2024 playoffs after knocking off Goff’s former team, the Los Angeles Rams, on Super Wild Card Weekend to make him only the third Lions’ quarterback to win multiple playoff games, and the first since Tobin Rote in 1957.
Alualu made his first start for the Lions on the defensive line and contributed one tackle and one quarterback hurry in Sunday’s win over the Buccaneers, while playing in just his fourth game overall for the Lions. Alualu joined Detroit’s practice squad on Dec. 5 after having not been previously affiliated with an NFL team in 2023. He saw his first action in Week 17 of the regular season.
Mekari played in 17 snaps (11 offensive line, 6 special teams) for Baltimore in a 34-10 home win over Houston in an AFC Divisional Round Game on Saturday.
Former Cal wide receiver Nikko Remigio is on Kansas City’s injured reserve list, while Patrick Laird (Tampa Bay practice squad) and Byron Storer (Green Bay assistant special teams coach) were affiliated with NFL teams that dropped Divisional Round contests this weekend.
